PAT Testing

What is it?

(Portable Appliance Testing)

A process by which electrical appliances are routinely checked to see if they are safe.
The testing consists of a visual and electrical inspection.

Why test?

British law requires that appliances are safe(as far as is reasonably practicable) and as such there is various legislation applicable to this. The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 require that employers maintain their "electrical systems" at work to prevent any danger to anyone. Insurance companies and health and safety consultants are realising how important it is. The legislation of specific relevance to electrical maintenance is:-

Health and Safety at Work Act 1974
Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999
Electricity at Work Regulations 1989
Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998
The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992

What is a portable appliance?

Any piece of electrical equipment that needs to be plugged in to a mains socket.

Which type of business needs to carry out testing?

The majority of businesses need some form of testing:-

• any business with its' own premises attended by staff, contractors, suppliers or customers
• self-employed people using electrical equipment for business purposes
• landlords and letting agents who supply electrical items to tenants

Our Service

Our Engineers use Seaward Prime Test 300 testers and carry out the testing at your convenience and are happy to test outside normal working hours so as to minimise disruption to your working day. All testing is carried out in accordance with the Institute of Electrical Engineers (IEE) Code of Practice.

We will provide:-

• Full electrical inspection
• Test Labels for all appliances tested with a unique ID
• Hard copy of Appliance register, detailing appliances and their location, date tested and date re-test is due, a full concise test report of all appliances tested, i.e. results of each test done
• Free replacemwent fuses
• Free minor repairs to flex and re-wiring of plugs
• Free Retest after repair
• Certificate of Testing
